Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD) has established a new location at 600 West Cummings Park in Woburn. The Woburn site is the seventh CARD office to open in Massachusetts. In December 2017, CARD opened a location at Cummings Center in Beverly.
CARD’s new 4,700-square-foot center features a sensory gym, which helps children with special needs develop their sensory, communication, and motor skills while improving fitness. Unlike standard fitness gyms that use treadmills and weights, a sensory gym is specifically geared for child development.
“Cummings’ in-house design and construction teams were able to create a child-friendly space to complement and enhance CARD’s programs,” said Steve Cusano, leasing officer at Cummings Properties, who worked on the transaction with brokerage firm Pacific Partners Commercial, Inc. “We are so pleased that CARD chose Woburn from which to offer its important services to families north of Boston.”
Cummings’ Woburn portfolio is home to a variety of organizations that focus on human services, including NuPath Inc., Supportive Living, and Youth Villages.
Founded in 1990, CARD has more than 180 locations in 32 states. Its clinicians specialize in using applied behavior analysis in the treatment of autism spectrum disorder. The curricula can be tailored to the specific needs of individuals, helping them learn to communicate, develop friendships, and build life skills.
Autism, or autism spectrum disorder, refers to a range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech, and nonverbal communication, as well as by unique strengths and differences. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates autism’s prevalence as 1 in 68 children in the United States, including 1 in 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls. Around the world, April is recognized at Autism Awareness Month.
