Cleantech Leaders Gather to Discuss Future Innovations and Real Estate Needs in Woburn

Nearly 50 leaders from the cleantech sector recently convened in Woburn, Massachusetts, to explore the evolving landscape of clean energy, sustainable infrastructure, and the growing demand for specialized real estate solutions. Hosted by Emvolon at its New Boston Street R&D facility and co-sponsored by Cummings Properties and the Middlesex 3 Coalition, the event provided valuable insights into the future of cleantech and how commercial real estate can play a critical role in supporting the industry’s growth.

A Glimpse Into the Future of Cleantech

The event kicked off with a panel discussion that asked, “What is Cleantech?” and then delved into technologies advancing the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. The discussion featured a distinguished panel of experts, including:

These industry professionals shared valuable insights into how cleantech companies are advancing innovations that not only drive sustainability but also require unique infrastructure to thrive.

Cleantech Innovations Leading the Charge

Emmanuel Kasseris and Gus Block offered powerful examples of how technologies such as fuel cells, hydrogen solutions, and waste-to-energy systems are accelerating cleantech adoption. These solutions are crucial in helping industries reduce carbon footprints and transition to cleaner, more efficient energy sources.

Kasseris shared the innovative work being done at Emvolon, a company that converts greenhouse gas emissions into carbon-negative fuels and chemicals like green methanol and green ammonia. By repurposing car engines as modular chemical plants, Emvolon is revolutionizing the way emissions are turned into usable energy.

Similarly, Block highlighted the role of Nuvera Fuel Cells in advancing hydrogen-based solutions that can fuel the clean energy transition, particularly in industries that are difficult to decarbonize.

Real Estate’s Role in Supporting the Cleantech Industry

Cummings senior account manager Jeff Pelletier added another important perspective, discussing how commercial real estate developers are adapting to meet the needs of the growing cleantech sector. From electric vehicle (EV) charging stations to energy-efficient building retrofits, Cummings and other real estate firms are integrating sustainable technologies into their properties to align with the increasing demand for eco-friendly infrastructure.

Woburn, home to a number of leading cleantech companies, has become a focal point for innovation in this space. Cummings Properties proudly offers office and lab space in the area for firms like Active Surfaces, Alsym Energy, Boston Metal, Daqus Energy, SES, VEIR, and Verdox—companies that are at the forefront of developing cutting-edge cleantech solutions.

Woburn: A Thriving Hub for Cleantech Innovation

Hagerty also highlighted Woburn’s role as a regional hub for cleantech growth, emphasizing the City’s favorable zoning, streamlined permitting processes, and access to a skilled workforce. The City’s commitment to supporting innovation in cleantech, combined with its proximity to a robust tech ecosystem, makes it an attractive location for cleantech startups and established companies alike.

“Creating a thriving cleantech community requires collaboration between municipalities, industry stakeholders, and commercial real estate leaders,” said Pelletier. “We are grateful to the Middlesex 3 Coalition for convening this event and supporting economic development in Woburn and the surrounding region.”
